The Review of Desiree’s Baby
Among all the classic works, Desiree’s Baby is the most impressive one which is written by the well-known writer Kate Chopin. In the story, an amazing life experience of a girl who is called Desiree is mentioned. This Desiree was abandoned by her own mother so later on she was adopted by Monsieur Valmonde. After she grew up to and get old enough to be married, she accepted the proposal from a rich man in the Creole family.
It seems the life of this adopted daughter in the family of Valmonde has a comfortable life with little troubles and she is the lucky girl. However, her life took a turn to be unimaginable after they gave birth to a baby. In fact, it was shocking that the baby that she gave birth to turned out to be one quarter African. This reality was quite unbearable for the family because at the time of the protagonist Desiree, it was not bearable for the parents to have a baby which had the African ancestry. Therefore, even though she tried to deny that it is possible that she could be half black, the family of Desiree believed she actually belonged to the black ancestry. In fact, it was not surprising because Desiree’s parents were unknown as she never saw them. However, the saddest part is that even though her husband Armand in the past insisted that he truly loved her, after knowing that her ancestry was the black people, he decided to kick her out of his home and what’s more brutal, he burned his wife’s belongings and the letters. However, it ended shockingly with the fact that the Armand was half black, which could not be revealed because the letters were all burned.
In fact, this story ended with a sad ending but it has conveyed the ideas of how black people were looked down upon at Kate Chopin’s time. Apparently, one’s color defined one’s status in the society so people back in Kate Chopin’s time paid much attention to their identity. However, what is ironic is that the definition of identity does not mean the “who they are”. On the contrary, the definition of identity that people were fixated on was only about “how other people identified them”.
I think that this idea did not only manipulate people’s thoughts. What is worse, it brainwashed people and misguided them to believe that they could not decide who they are but they had to be controlled by the social norms to accept who they are. For the female protagonist in the story, Desiree was the victim of the conventional social norms as well as the biased opinions towards black people back in the nineteenth century. In the past before she gave birth to the baby, no one ever identified her to be the children of the black people, so she could be spoiled by a good family and courted by a handsome man from a wealthy family. However, after she gave birth to the baby and her identity about being the child of the black ancestry was revealed, she met with all the bad treatments such as being kicked out of her home and being abandoned by the family. In fact, what made a person at that time was not about how much education that person had or how good this person is about what race or what gender this person belonged to. For example, in the story, the female protagonist Desiree was thought to be the woman who needed to fulfill her identity by raising the kid and taking care of her husband. Apparently, the worth of Desiree is at home and her fate could be decided by her husband. Although it is ironic that in the end, her husband is the one who should be looked down upon due to his black ancestry, no one ever found out about this truth. As a result, these people kept treating Desiree badly like she was the slave.
To conclude, the story written by Kate Chopin has conveyed to us that people back in their time had a strong sense of identity because it decided their social status. However, unfortunately, their social status was not relevant to how much education they had received or how good personality they had. On the contrary, everyone’s birth decided their social status, which means that if a person is born from a black ancestry, this person will be treated as the inferior forever. Also, if a person was born to be a female, her fate was directly linked to the fate of her husbands and their duty was to give birth to a white baby and take care of the baby. Therefore, the story of Desiree’s Baby is ironic and it also criticized the out dated social norm in the nineteenth century.
