I think it is true that global warming has becoming a more serious issue than before because as the entire world gets warmer, it is likely that the sea level will rise up so many small nations which only had an island might get in the risk of being drowned. Therefore, it is understandable that people prefer to pay more attention to the problems of temperatures getting higher. However, according to the majority of the citizens in America, they think that the problems of global warming have been exaggerated. For me, I also agree with this point because I think that the problem is global warming is indeed getting more serious but it does not mean it gets as serious as how the experts had claimed it. For example, according to the report in the Washington News, it is said that although the majority of Americans think that they are experiencing abnormal weather every day lately but only less than five people among ten think that this issue is indeed as serious as how the experts have put it.
Based on the data that I have found, I believe that it is indeed important for the government from different nations as well as the citizens there to take this issue seriously because the increase of temperature indeed had caused many problems such as the death of specific types of animals or the small islands being put in danger. However, I do not think that people should feel afraid of it because it has been proved that the problem of global warming does not increase indefinitely. On the contrary, according to the scientific reports, global warming has stopped since temperatures have been stable for several years. From the data in the Organization of God and science, in the article called Global warming Myths: Bogus Science and Exaggerated Claims for Climate change, it mentioned that “although surface temperatures have risen rapidly in the last one hundred years, in the last 8 years, temperature in our world had started to level up”, it is obvious that people do not need to concern too much.
However, although I think the problem has been exaggerated, it does not mean that we should ignore it or not take any actions at all. Things are needed to be done, the sooner, the better. For as we can all see by ourselves, the consequences of global warming have made some bad effects on the living conditions of various creatures and maybe human beings ourselves in the near future. Therefore, we cannot stress hard enough on the significance of arousing people’s awareness about the issue and the urge to do something about it.
Even though there are still arguments out there over whether or not the global warming thing is real, there is strong evidence that if we human beings do not do something about it, there is no way but going down. We have been through some tough weather these recent years. The summers are hotter, some said that summer in 2015 was the hottest in the recorded history, and winters are fiercer, this new year, even cities lying on the Tropic of Cancer witnessed snow, which was really buzzard. The extreme weather condition is one of the reflections of global warming effects. We have experienced that and we are hoping not to repeat that again. Hence, there are countries and companies that are responsible enough to take their emission amount of carbon dioxide into consideration when they are making the strategies. Take member countries of Kyoto Protocol as example. The Protocol maintains that its goal is to protect human beings from being threatened by effects of globe warming. To make that happen, actions are needed. Advanced technologies are developed to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, more trees are planted to whittle down the totally amount of greenhouse gases and so on. Not only countries are acting as a whole, there are also people acting as individual trying their best to reduce their carbon footprints. They choose bus or subway to and from school and work instead of diving their cars all the time, they grow vegetables in their own garden so as not to buy products that are shipped from far away and they are careful about the recycle and the reuse policies and know how to make better use of things that seem to be of no use to others. Countries and people are acting, they are taking the responsibilities, not only for them, but for the future of their children, that of our children’s, and more importantly, the future of the entire mankind. So what about us? What can we do to help? Since we were kids, we were told to turn off the lights when we leave the room, turn off the faucet when we were brushing our teeth and etcetera. In fact, these matters count. We are not solving the problem of globe warming in a snap, but we can always move closer to the ultimate goal, by doing little things, step by step. Change the light bulbs in your home for the energy saving ones for starter, buy local products as much as you can, car pool with your friends, take a shorter shower and run your washing machine when it is full. There are so many things that we can do, the problem is whether or not we are willing to do them. My point of view is, why not? We can always make our world a better place while at the meantime not lowering our life standards. Global warming is an issue that concerns every one of us, and if there is something we can do, we ought to do it. Not to mention that there are so many small things that we can do. All we need to keep in mind is that every step counts when we know that it is the right way to help make the world a better one. Think small, do small, but we aim big. That’s all for my speech, thank you for your listening.
