Water Supply in San Antonio and Endocrine Disruptors
There are a lot of big American cities that are running out of water because the officials in these cities do not pay enough efforts into improving t he water supply system or to make the water supply system work better. However in the city San Antonio, its water supply system has been known as firstly affordable. It does not charge mad prices like private companies that only supply “well filtered” water to the upper class people. Also, it is known as sustainable, which means that water supply is the city does not stop and it used clean energy to support the entire system. Thirdly, the water supply project in San Antonio is also known as diversified.
In the past, the water supply project in San Antonio had relied on pumping to satisfy the need in the city. However, nowadays, because of the good planning from the city official as well as the government’s load of funds to support the system, it becomes sustainable now.
The water supply project in San Antonio had been highly praised because they have predicted well the amount of water that the city needs. Also, the group of people in charge has also come up with good plans for the development of the water supply system.
Therefore, now, in my city San Antonio, the water supply bureau can still make sure there is enough water supply even in the difficult time like the earthquake and the storm. As it has been stated above, the water system is affordable because the water supply bureau had been using supplies that do not cost too much money since they have realized that the future of a water supply system can only last if it makes sure people can afford it.
Even though the water supply system is quite a success in San Antonio, it is also facing a multiple of problems. Recently, there is a piece of new titled as “Despite Successes, Water Still Vexes San Antonio”. In fact, like many other cities, the water supply system in San Antonio is also trying to deal with the continuous growth of water needs in the city due to the growth of population. However, it is also struggling with the unstable water supply. For example, according to the news report in the Texas Tribune, the water supply system in San Antonio is trying to find a new and a cheaper method that can replace the Edwards Aquifer that the bureau is using currently.
However, the officials in San Antonio have been making plans to solve the water supply problem by “destroying” or by “sacrificing” the rural area in the city. Thus, a lot of rural communities were forced to be moved away. As a result, the green land in the city had been greatly diminished and sacrificed in order to support the water supply.
Thus nowadays, the law enforcement intends to limit the project of the water supply system in San Antonio. For example, as the news reports in the Texas Tribune have stated before, the federal judges have warned the company and demanded that it should not pump too much water because this behavior will not only harm the green plants in the rural area but also harm the endangered species as well. (Michael R. Wilson, 2009)
In fact, there are a lot of scientists who have paid close attention to the water supply’s problems. What has been mentioned in the paragraphs above were relevant to the quantity of water supply in the city. However, more attention shall be paid to the quality of water supply system.
Recently, there are a lot of studies of which the aim is to understand what is in our water supply system. More and more people are paying attention to the endocrine disruptors that were left in our water supply system. In fact, a lot of fellows of mine in the United States of America are constantly haunted by the fact that too much hormone disrupting chemicals such as the endocrine disruptors were dumped in the environment. One example is the chemical called the Bisphenol which was found in plastic packing, our kleenix as well as our water supply. This chemical is greatly related to causing serious illness such as lung cancer or incapability to have a baby or in the worst cases scenario, it will result in a person being deformed. Therefore, the hormone disruptors which were accidentally or on purpose left in the citizen’s water supply system has been a serious problem.
Among all these chemicals, one type has caught a lot of attention: that is the endocrine disrupting object. These endocrine disrupting chemicals were mostly found in the rivers or in the lakes. A lot of scientists have done experiments in hope of discovering new ways to destroy such kind of chemicals in the water. However, they are not so easily being disrupted. In fact, the power of sun and its sunlight can to some degree break down the chemical compounds in these endocrine disrupting items. However, it the sun goes down and the world became dark again at night, these chemicals can regenerate again. It is obvious that the chemicals cannot be broken down easily. (Rajesh K. Naz, 2004)
In fact, the water that we are consuming every day is not like the natural water that we used to drink. The reason is because countless of medical products are contaminating our water supply system and the water supply system in San Antonio is similar to many other water supply systems in other cities. For example, many of the medicines that we are having nowadays such as the birth control pills or other drugs are getting into our water supply system, which will definitely result in sacrificing our health. As it has been stated in the above paragraphs, this might end up causing human beings to infertile, thus, the hormone upsetting chemicals in the San Antonia’s water supply system and other water supply systems in other cities will lead to the destruction of the evolution of human beings because of failure to reproduce. In fact, it is important to first understand as well as to study the endocrine system in human body and to see how the endocrine system in human body can work. The truth is that the endocrine system in human body has included many glands in our bodies and it has direct connections to the hormones that were produced by the glands that were mentioned above.
This glands is directly responsible to controlling many functioning in our bodies. However, before what the glands can control was mentioned, it is important to study what the glands were controlled by. In fact, the glands in our bodies are controlled by some of the chemical receptor in our blood as well as in other glands. Therefore, if there is hormone disruptors in the water that we have consumed, it is possible that these hormone disruptors, or to be concise, these endocrine disruptors will disrupt the chemical receptor in our blood as well as in other glands. As a result, our chemical receptors will fail to receive the nutrition or the elements that our body need to develop the glands that is responsible to the development of the endocrine system in our body.
In fact, the normal functioning of our endocrine system can make sure that our bodies’ homeostasis was safely maintained. Because the normal functioning of our endocrine system is directly affecting our reproduction, heart rate, digestions and many other organs’ functioning. Therefore, if the endocrine system in our body was disrupted due to the endocrine disruptors from the water supply and if the problem gets more serious, it might end up harming our sexual development and causing our infertility, which means the incapability to bear babies. That is why it is said that the excessive amount of endocrine disruptors in the body’s system will harm our body’s functioning and also destroyed the evolution of human beings. (Ronald C. Besides, if the endocrine system is interrupted by the endocrine disruptors in the water supply systems, it is likely that it will cause a big trouble in our daily life. One gland that is controlling the endocrine system in our body system is called the pancreas. This pancreas gland is known to be the large gland which is placed in a part of the stomach.
This gland pancreas is thought to be containing the tissues from endocrine and exocrine as well. The function of this part of the gland is to make sure people can produce a normal degree of the hormone glucagon. This part if linked directly our body’s hormone glucagon level. The well functioning of our hormone glucagon level can make sure that our blood glucose level can be lowered. As a result, our body can adapt to changes after we finish a meal. Therefore, if the body’s endocrine system is interrupted by the chemicals in our body, it will lead to digestions or failure to absorb certain nutrition in the body system, resulting in malnutrition and inability to grow up healthily.
In my hometown San Antonio, most citizens usually get the water supply from the water supply companies. Thus, they have made sure the water that we consumed in the body is perfectly filtered. Because of the unbalance of water supply in many cities, most of the water supply comes from the reservoir or the dams built by the cities. in fact, in San Antonio and in many other cities, dams are built along the river so that it prevents the excessive amount of water from the water from being wasted. (Steve Hoffmann, 2009) One common function of the dams is that it helps us collect and store the amount of water that we do not need while we have the extra amount. In fact, the water that was stored in the dam during the season of much precipitation can be harnessed to support the lives of the people in the area, especially in difficult times. (Ronald C. However, according to many new reports, because of many water supply companies are struggling with protecting a sustainable and affordable water supply systems, it means they have to cut off other costs such as the costs that they need to protect the water or to save money for more profits. Therefore, they have a tendency of choosing to neglect the issues. However, in San Antonio, the water filtering system is able to get rid of endocrine disruptors but it is still unknown if other harmful hormone upsetting chemicals can be filtered as well.
To sum up, the local water supply system in San Antonio is so far satisfying because the water supply company has made sure that its water is not only sustainable but also affordable. However, it is not appropriate to only focus on studying the quantity of water such as how much water the city can supply citizens with or whether the city can make sure its supply in difficult times. In fact, it is worth noticing the water supply system’s quality because nowadays, scientists have discovered that not only in the water supply system in San Antonio but in many other cities as well, there are too man hormone upsetting chemicals such as the endocrine disruptors. These endocrine disruptors will harm the receptors in our bodies’ endocrine system, which will result in serious consequences such as infertility, indigestion and malnutrition because the endocrine system in our body is acting like a tool of communication that can affect many of human beings’ physical functioning. Therefore, it is important to make sure the water supply system is without any hormone upsetting chemicals. The water providers need to have endocrine disruptors testing and once it is shown that the water is with endocrine disruptors, the water suppliers need to make use of technology to filter them or to break down their compounds.
