On The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

In the nineteenth century, a lot of authors started to focus on writing stories about the human beings as well as they mind. The consciousness of human beings such as their dark side was explored in a more profound aspect. For the novel The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, it is one of the masterpieces in which a person’ dual personalities, or to be more precise, double egos are reflected.

This story is mainly about a man previously known to be Dr. Jekyll who was a kind person but he constantly felt like inside his mind, there are good and evil fighting and struggling to dominate his mind. However, after he had consumed the serum that he created, which he previously made to control his evil desire, he ended up turning into this very tiny, brutal and evil person. He was then called the evil Hyde. He completely forgot the fact that he was previously a kind person.

The theme of this story mainly discussed human being’s complexity and it is based on the conception that human beings are also dual at the same time. In the last chapter, when the author had completely revealed the truth about Jekyll as well as Hyde’s relationship. The readers were then informed about the dual human nature after they have understood what exactly had happened in the story. (Kainz, 32)

In the last chapter when the evil part Jekyll felt so desperate that he chose to murder brutally Carew and when he saw a dead human body, he did not feel sad or sympathized with this person. On the contrary, he felt delighted and proud in his crime. This is the evil part of human beings. However, for Jekyll, he was kneeling down, keeping pray for the evil side of himself. Apparently, this represents one of the main character’s dual personalities, the bright and kind one.

In the novel, the good side of the protagonist Jekyll had claimed that “man is not truly one, but truly two”, in which the conception of human’s duality had been revealed directly. In many of the incidents in the story, it is apparent that in the human beings’ mind, a battle always exists in which the bright side fights with the dark side. This conception had also been exposed in another masterpiece by Mary Shelly, Frankenstein. In that masterpiece, the creature was first born to be kind and considerate but later after he had experienced being bullied and laughed at by the majority of people, he felt so desperate that he was struggling inside himself, feeling sometimes sad and depressed that he decided to do bad deeds to compensate his weakness. In fact, in the story of The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are somewhat similar to Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley because these “two people” had also experienced the struggle inside their mind, getting stuck in the dilemma about which side they should choose, the bad side or the bright side. However, these two people are actually the two souls in one human, as Jekyll in the story had imagined that human soul is more like a battleground for the evil part and the angel side to fight against one another. Therefore, the side that beat another one will dominate the mind of that person. (Kainz, 23) At the beginning of the novel, the kind Doctor Jekyll tried to create the serum for himself, in hope of getting rid of the dark side of his human soul. From this detail, it is easy for us to tell that although at the time, the other side, the Mr. Hyde had not existed yet, the main character was already struggling between the desire to act good or evil. Apparently, his mind sometimes was affected or infiltrated by the dark power, and that was the reason why he made efforts to try to expel the evil power by making the serum. However, it did not end up as much as how he had expected it. On the contrary, the dark side of himself was unleashed from this body and as it slowly took over, the kind Doctor. Jekyll was murdered.

Also, the dual human personality is also counted as the uncanny part of the world. The double is one of the conceptions of the uncanny. In Freud’s words, the doubled double means that human beings also have their own alter ego. However, because this alter ego has been “long forgotten and repressed”, in our psychiatric being, if it was intrigued to appear again, it will have a serious effect on human bodies. (Gray)

Also, according to Freud, the Uncanny part of human beings means that people agree or confirm to return to the “surmounted primitive beliefs of the human species, such as animism, etc.” Based on the conception of animism, it means that all natural objects, even the universe itself, especially the human beings are all in possession of their own desires and intentions. For the protagonist, because he had tried too hard to oppress his desires that in the end, this alter ego eventually outburst and took over the angel part of Doctor Jekyll. (Gray)

To conclude, in The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the conception of the uncanny and the duality had been introduced. In fact, the protagonist himself had experienced the dual human personalities, which are the evil one and the kind one. However, in the end, because the animalistic side of him had been oppressed too long, it eventually took over the kind side of him. The final statement of Mr. Hyde had shown that human beings mind is not only complicated but also consists of virtue and evil. However, the ending created by Stevenson is like the puzzle that guided us to ponder and contemplate the issue of human’s duality and uncanny.
