The Problems of Imperial Succession

The imperial Russia was once deemed to be the world respected nation with the most powerful military power as well as the fast economic development. In fact, the Russian Empire was formed in the middle of the 18th century, However, it was ended in 1917 after the French revolution. Afterwards, the nation Russia had been adopted the rule of monarchy to deal with the problems of who should get the throne. In Russia, it is defined that the Russian Imperial House is like an organization where people who are blood relative to the empire are able to inherit the throne or they can marry the relatives of the emperor to get access to the throne.

However, based on the imperial succession, people usually thought of a variety of ways to claim a potential succession to the Kingdom. Therefore, from time to time, the policy of the imperial succession would result violent fight or arguments about which party was supposed to be the inherent of the throne. As a result, civil wars would be intrigued. It is different from the ways of selecting president in the modern days in which the majority of the citizens will decide who is most suitable for the throne. In fact, in the 17th century, one of the Russian presidents called Paul once claimed in public that he is the inherent of the throne. (Martin, n. d.)

However, sometimes, the rules can be interpreted in a variety of ways. As a result, Peter failed to be nominated or appointed to be the Emperor. Neither did his sons or even grandsons. It is obvious that the rule of monarchy, the imperial succession was not as steady or reliable because there were changes often. These changes of the heir to the throne are usually caused by the palace coup, which means that the other people who belonged to other branches of the royal family will start a protest to seize their power by betraying the other members of their family. Also, it is mentioned by in the article Succession to the imperial Throne of Russia, it is the “result of factious struggles of family or class groupings”. Therefore, even though Peter wanted to promote the statute because he firmly believed that it was an effective way to make sure his reforms will last, the power of it cannot even exceed the effects of party interests or other pressure groups. That is the reason why before Pal managed to get the succession to the throne, he was stopped by a variety of threats from the palace. (Martin, n. d.)

In fact, in one article in the laws has indicated that “the emperor who possesses the throne of all the Russians cannot profess any faith other than the Orthodox”. This article can caused serious problems in the nation because the article itself was biased or to be precise, prejudiced against a certain party of people in the nation. Therefore, any members from the Orthodox Church will never get the chance to get succession to the throne, which is a symbol of intolerance in the country.

There is also another important rule of the imperial succession of the Russian Imperial: if the husband and the wife from the imperial family was married of “unequal rank”, which means that one of the spouses was not as high ranking as those in the Imperial family, it is likely that they and their family will lose the right to the imperial succession. Therefore, only when both of the parents are the pure members of the imperial family, can their sons get the opportunity to get access to the throne. Therefore, those members who are not the fully members of the imperial family would commit any actions or crimes to hide their past identity. (Burbank, & Ransel, 1998)

The policy of monarchy can support the authority of the royal family and thus the nation can be more stable to fight against the foreign enemies. The imperial succession of Russia is one of the reasons why the nation has been powerful enough to withstand the fight or the confrontations from other nations. However, the flaw of its imperial succession is more than causing the civil wars or the fight for power in the palace. The principal problem is that not every member from the royal family is capable of having good leadership skills. They have become the leaders of the nations not because of their talents or ability. On the contrary, it was because they were appointed according to the flawed laws. For example, Stalin is the example of the monarch of the Russian imperial succession. Although they have come up with good policies to get its nation more powerful but they have made bad decisions to cause the nation to fail in the twentieth century.

To conclude, Russia had adopted the imperial succession to the throne, which helped the nation to keep itself safe from the foreign enemies to some degree. However, it also led to violent arguments and fights inside the palace sometimes because members from different branches of the royal family would come up with coups to fight for the throne. Also, the imperial succession stopped the nation from electing the talented and quailed ruler, which was the most fundamental flaw.
