Professor Humbert Humbert in Lolita

Whenever people are talking about novels that have represented love or lust between a person who is much older and a little child, the first work that will ever come to their minds is the famous novel called Lolita written Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov. In this novel, a kind of love that is usually hard for people to understand has been shown and it is about the most heatedly debated topic among all human beings ever. The protagonist is the novel is a middle aged narrator but also a professor named as Humbert Humbert. This middle aged narrator is obsessed with a little girl and instead of sitting still to hold his desires, he has actually taken a step to get close to the little girl by sexually involving her in his life. He even created a weird nickname for the little girl Dolores to be Lolita.

As it has been mentioned above that this book is indeed controversial but it has been considered as one of the most famous and most successful novels ever since it has created the topic that no one was ever thought about before. A lot of people failed to under the love between this middle aged professor as well as the girl who is only twelve years old thus they are strongly against the novel. In fact, whenever a story has been written about and the love depicted is not like the love that has been accepted or done by the majority or the social rule, it will always create a controversial topic. For example, back in twenty years ago the homosexual people were as brave as now to come out of the closet. As a result, when the movie the Broke Back Mountain was first introduced to the people, since during that time, gay protests were not as popular as now, a lot of people found it hard to accept two men falling in love and getting sexually involved. One time, he wrote “The tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap”, which had indicated that they had kissed passionately. People have discussed the novel and they have been debating about if the love and sexual relationship between a much older man and this little girl is appropriate or obscene.

In fact, some people who are against the love from Humbert Humbert to the girl of 12 years old Lolita have stated strongly that there is no way they can ever support the sexual attraction a middle aged man harbor for the little girl since it is too disgusting. A lot of the opponents of the sexual relationship between them have agreed that this is not the kind of love that mentally healthy people are able to accept. For example, a student called Lexine Galvez in a college literature class has mentioned that he believes the professor Humbert Humbert is a terrible pervert who deserves to be put behind bars due to his gross and abnormal sexual desires. These people do not think the middle aged professor is is a normal person who is “in love”. On the contrary, he is in fact a rapist who has taken advantage of an innocent young girl.

In fact, this opinion is a little strong but some other opponents has mentioned that he is not a mentally sick person but he is more like a pedophile. Humbert Humbert has recognized his desire and his fire which are not easy to be held back towards the little girl. However, a responsible person would have tried to control his desire since it is commonly accepted that this type of love is not appropriate. However, according to David Vaknin, another student in the literature class, he thinks that Humbert Humbert does not hold responsibility towards his own behavior so he lets his own desire act on itself. However, he is not too against the professor’s love and he has also acknowledge the professor’ impressive language to attract his Lolita, such as “Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul.”

However, some other people have agreed that although this piece of writing is somehow disturbing, it is still not fair to deny the entire literature because of the uncommon topic that has been written. Also, the work is brilliant with its own language and the love poems read by Humbert Humbert are so amazing and attractive that some people have been charmed by his sincerity about the relationship. According to what he wrote such as “There might have been no Lolita at all had I not loved, one summer, an initial girl-child” which can show his sincerity. Some in the end, a lot of people started to feel sympathized with the professor.

However, for me, I am strongly against the behavior of Humbert Humbert because it is not only about the love and the desire that we human beings need to take into account. In fact, when a person has decided to start a relationship, it is not necessary to see if the majority of people are doing it but it is necessary to see if it is moral. The way to judge if the matter is moral is by looking at its consequences and to figure out if the matter will harm the other person. In this case, the teenager girl is still too young to be exposed to sex but if the person who is obsessed with her has lured her, this person is like a pervert. For example, I think homosexual marriage is acceptable although a lot of people are against because the majority of us are heterosexual. However, if a middle aged man has fallen in love with a teenage boy, then it is another case.

To sum up, it is true that the love depicted in the novel Lolita is moving and some people have sympathized with the professor’s desires. However, I am against his attitude because he does not consider the benefits for a little girl due to his irrational actions. It might be alright to have the love and sexual desire towards a little girl and bury it in the heart. However, if the man has taken actions to lure the girl into loving him and having sexual relationships with him, this man would be like a selfish pervert. I do agree that the love poems are beautiful but if they are written for a woman who is his age or at least is an adult, then it would be a beautiful love story.
